Artemide Tolomeo Tavolo – buy online: the original desk lamp from 1987

The classic in its purest form – the two-part articulated arm in aluminium

The Artemide Tolomeo Tavolo is the starting point of one of the most significant lamp families in the history of design. Designed in 1987 by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina for Artemide, it was awarded the Compasso d'Oro in 1989 – and has since stood in architects' offices, on the desks of brilliant minds and in the collections of the MoMA in New York. What distinguishes the Tavolo from all other task lamps is its spring balance mechanism: no tightening of screws, no creaking – the arm glides into any position and stays there, as if it were the only right one. Leuchtenland is an authorized Artemide dealer and carries the Tolomeo Tavolo in all key finishes.

The Tolomeo Tavolo at a glance

Tolomeo Tavolo Aluminium – the original

The classic Tolomeo Tavolo in aluminium is the lamp as De Lucchi conceived it in 1987: polished aluminium arms, matt anodised conical shade, round base. Available as an LED version in 2700K (warm white) or 3000K (neutral white), optionally also as a Tunable White version (2200–6500K) for maximum flexibility throughout the day. Alternatively the Metal Grey version with classic halogen technology.

Tolomeo Tavolo in black and white

In recent years the Tolomeo Tavolo has also become available in black and white – an extension that makes the lamp integrable into modern interiors with dark or light colour schemes, without compromising its design language. The spring balance mechanism, the conical shade, the joints – everything as in the original, just in a different colour.

Tolomeo Tavolo with motion sensor

A special variant: the Tolomeo Tavolo with integrated motion sensor. The lamp switches on automatically when someone sits down at the desk and dims after a defined period without movement. Ideal for work areas where convenient energy operation is important – without forgoing the classic Tolomeo design.

Tolomeo Tavolo Pure Integralis

The Pure Integralis variant adds a germ-reducing light component to the desk lamp's function – developed for rooms where hygiene plays a role. The exterior is as in the original; the technology behind it goes beyond pure illumination.

The spring balance – what makes the Tolomeo an icon

The two-part arm of the Tolomeo Tavolo is not held in position by clamp screws, but by a system of tensioned springs inside. The result is a lamp that immediately yields to light pressure and locks into any new position – precisely, silently, without effort. The surfaces speak for themselves:

• Polished aluminium – arm, joints and base in a rich lustre, light and precise
• Matt anodised aluminium shade – conical form, low-glare light, iconic silhouette
• Base or desk clamp – interchangeable, depending on the installation situation
• Black and white – as colour variants for modern interior concepts

Artemide – lighting design from Milan since 1960

Artemide was founded in Milan in 1960 and has since been one of the most influential lighting manufacturers in Italy. The collaboration with Michele De Lucchi, Giancarlo Fassina, Vico Magistretti and other design legends has created a product portfolio that is represented in the permanent collections of the MoMA in New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Tolomeo Tavolo is the best-known product of this house – an object that has been produced unchanged for almost 40 years because it was right from the start.

Frequently asked questions about the Artemide Tolomeo Tavolo

What distinguishes the Tolomeo Tavolo from other desk lamps?

The decisive difference is the spring balance mechanism: the Tolomeo Tavolo holds any position without screw locking – a light touch is all it takes to move the arm. This system, combined with the reduced aluminium form and the conical shade, has made the Tavolo one of the most widely discussed desk lamps in the world since 1987.

Is the Tolomeo Tavolo also available as an LED version?

Yes. The Tolomeo Tavolo is available in several LED versions: in 2700K (warm white) and 3000K (neutral white), each at 8 watts, as well as a Tunable White version (2200–6500K, 11W) that continuously adjusts the colour temperature between warm white and daylight white. All LED versions are long-lasting and low-maintenance.

With base or desk clamp?

The mounting of the Tolomeo Tavolo is interchangeable: you can place the lamp freely on the desk with the round base or attach it to the desk edge with a desk clamp. Both options are included in the delivery or available separately. We are happy to advise on which is better suited to your desk.

Which colour temperature is recommended for a workspace?

For focused work, 3000K (neutral white) or the TW version (2200–6500K) is considered ideal – cooler and more alert during the day, warmer and more relaxed in the evening. Anyone who also uses their desk as a reading area will have the most flexibility with the TW variant. For a classic desk setup without complex requirements, the 2700K version is the most tried and tested choice.

Is the Tolomeo Tavolo suitable for a home office?

Yes – the Tolomeo Tavolo is one of the few lamps designed for professional work environments that also fits perfectly in a living space. Its design is timeless enough to work in any interior style; its functionality is designed for long, intensive working days. Many users have been using it for decades – unchanged, without defects, without wear.

Is there a version with a motion sensor?

Yes. The Tolomeo Tavolo is also available with an integrated motion sensor. This version switches on automatically as soon as someone sits down at the desk and dims automatically after absence. Ideal for offices with frequent breaks or for anyone who wants to reduce their energy consumption at the workplace.

Is Leuchtenland an authorized Artemide dealer?
