Glare is caused by excessive luminance levels or strong brightness contrasts within the field of vision – either as direct glare from the light source itself or as reflected glare off glossy surfaces. Effective countermeasures include diffusers, reflectors, louvre grilles, correct luminaire positioning and indirect lighting. Due to their small yet extremely bright light-emitting surface, LEDs produce more glare than traditional incandescent bulbs and therefore require appropriate shielding.
