EU Energy Label for Light Sources Explained
What Is the EU Energy Label?
The EU energy label is a legally required marking that indicates the energy consumption of light sources on a scale from A (very efficient) to G (least efficient). The revised scale has been in effect since September 2021 and no longer contains plus classes (A+, A++, A+++).
Why Was the Label Changed?
Due to the rapid development of LED technology, virtually all light sources had migrated to the highest classes of A+ to A+++. The differences between products were barely discernible for consumers. The new scale from A to G once again provides clear differentiation and leaves room for future efficiency improvements.
What Does the Energy Label Show?
The current EU energy label for light sources contains:
- Energy efficiency class (A to G) with a colour-coded bar scale
- Energy consumption in kilowatt hours (kWh) per 1,000 operating hours
- QR code linking to the EU product database EPREL
How Is the Efficiency Class Calculated?
The classification is based on the Energy Efficiency Index (EEI). This relates the actual power consumption to the luminous flux produced (lumens). The more lumens per watt a light source produces – i.e. the higher the luminous efficacy – the better the class.
Current LED light sources typically achieve classes D to F. Class A has been deliberately reserved for future developments and is as yet rarely assigned.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why is my LED only class F?
The new scale is more stringent than the old one. An LED previously rated A+ under the old scale may be classified as F under the new one – this does not mean it is any less efficient than before.
Does the energy label also apply to luminaires?
Since September 2021, only light sources (lamps) are required to carry the energy label. Luminaires with permanently integrated LEDs also bear a label.
What does the QR code on the label mean?
The QR code links to the EU product database EPREL, where additional technical data and the product datasheet are stored.
In Summary:
The EU energy label provides transparent guidance on the energy efficiency of light sources. The scale from A to G enables straightforward comparison and helps in selecting energy-saving lighting. At Leuchtenland.com you will find the current energy efficiency class and the corresponding product datasheet for every light source.
