Knapstein Dynamic White explained: steplessly control light colour by gesture
Quick summary: Knapstein Dynamic White
The Knapstein Dynamic White control allows the colour temperature of the light – from warm white to cool white – to be adjusted steplessly using gesture control directly at the luminaire. The system is permanently integrated into selected Knapstein pendant luminaires and requires no external wall dimmer, app, or remote control. Operation is via a contactless sensor: dimming and colour temperature are controlled by holding your hand above the sensor briefly or for longer. A characteristic flicker of the luminaire indicates the current operating mode.
What is Knapstein Dynamic White?
Dynamic White refers to the function integrated into selected Knapstein pendant luminaires for stepless adjustment of the light colour temperature. The luminaires can switch between different shades of white – from warm, cosy light (e.g. 2,700 K) to cool, daylight-like light (e.g. 6,500 K). Control is performed exclusively via the integrated sensor on the luminaire, with no additional wall dimmer or external control unit required.
The Dynamic White function is part of Knapstein's integrated gesture control and is installed in series such as the RUNA (art. no. 51.486, 51.487, 51.489, 51.532) and the ZERA (art. no. 51.517, 51.518).
How does it work?
The gesture control uses a contactless sensor that responds to hand movements within a defined detection range. In the RUNA series, the sensor is located at the centre of each light strip (upper and lower light) – entering the detection range is indicated by a brief flash of a function LED. Control follows a fixed sequence of three modes:
Switching on and off
A simple swipe motion over the sensor switches the luminaire on or off.
Dimming
Holding the hand above the sensor for longer dims the light source up or down. The luminaire is always in dimming mode by default. Important: dimming must always be completed to the maximum level (fully bright or fully dim) before the direction can be changed.
Setting the colour temperature (Dynamic White)
Switching to colour change mode follows a defined sequence:
- Dim and release: Briefly dim the light source up or down, then remove your hand from the sensor. The luminaire flickers briefly – this is the signal that it has switched to colour change mode.
- Set colour temperature: Within approximately 2 seconds, pass your hand over the sensor again and hold it until the desired light colour is reached. The colour temperature always changes fully in one direction first (fully warm or fully cool). The process can be interrupted and continued by intervening multiple times.
- Return to dimming mode: If the sensor is not activated for approximately 2 seconds, the luminaire flickers again – signalling a return to dimming mode. Brightness can then be adjusted again within the last selected light colour.
Special feature of the ZERA series: master/follower
The ZERA pendant luminaires feature multiple reflectors and a master/follower system. The master reflector – identified by a red dot sticker – automatically transfers all settings (brightness and colour temperature) to all follower reflectors. The follower reflectors can then be adjusted individually and independently using their own gesture control.
Which luminaires feature Dynamic White?
- RUNA series (art. no. 51.486, 51.487, 51.489, 51.532): sensor located at the centre of each light strip for upper and lower light. Stepless height adjustment of approx. 80 cm.
- ZERA series (art. no. 51.517, 51.518): sensor on the reflectors with master/follower system. Stepless height adjustment of approx. 100 cm. Both models also suitable for sloped ceilings.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do I need a wall dimmer for the Dynamic White function?
No. All control – dimming and colour change – is performed exclusively via the integrated sensor on the luminaire. An upstream wall dimmer is neither required nor permitted.
How do I know when the luminaire has switched to colour change mode?
The luminaire flickers briefly. This flicker is the status signal: one flicker after dimming = colour change mode active. A second flicker after approximately 2 seconds without interaction = return to dimming mode.
Can I switch directly from warm white to cool white?
The colour temperature always changes fully in one direction first (fully warm or fully cool) before it can change in the other direction. The desired intermediate level can be set precisely by intervening briefly multiple times.
What happens when I switch the luminaire on using a wall switch?
Switching on via a wall switch may result in a slightly delayed switch-on response at the luminaire. This is technically normal.
Can I control the upper and lower light of the RUNA series independently?
Yes. The RUNA series has a separate sensor for the upper light and the lower light. Both light strips can be adjusted independently in terms of brightness and colour temperature.
In summary:
The Knapstein Dynamic White control makes adjusting the light colour as simple as possible – directly at the luminaire, with no additional technology required. The intuitive flicker signal indicates the current mode at all times. Whether warm evening light or cool working light: the colour temperature can be adjusted at any time with a single hand movement.
