IP68 Protection Rating Explained
What Does IP68 Mean?
The protection rating IP68 denotes luminaires that are completely dust-tight (first digit: 6) and protected against continuous submersion in water (second digit: 8). The exact submersion depth and duration are determined by the manufacturer and must be specified separately.
IP68 is the highest standard protection rating for luminaires and is used in particularly demanding applications:
- Underwater lighting in pools and fountains
- In-ground luminaires in drive-over areas
- Industrial lighting in wet areas
IP68 exceeds IP67, which only covers temporary submersion.
